Our approach
At Architecta, we design homes that are comfortable, energy-efficient and built to last. Our work focuses on thoughtful architecture that respects both the people who live in a building and the environment it sits within.
Working across our studios in Cumbria and Cambridge, we combine sustainable design knowledge with practical building expertise. Using natural materials and fabric-first design principles, we create homes that perform well, age well and feel good to live in.
We collaborate closely with our clients throughout the process, ensuring that each project reflects your lifestyle, priorities and vision for your home.
What we do
We specialise in sustainable residential architecture, helping homeowners design and improve their homes through:
Retrofit and energy upgrades to traditional and solid wall buildings
House extensions and renovations that improve both space and energy performance
Low-energy new homes designed with Passivhaus-informed principles
Our work combines thoughtful architectural design with practical energy-efficiency strategies to create homes that are warmer, healthier, and cheaper to run.
A key part of our process is 3D design from the very beginning. Using Autodesk Revit, we create a single coordinated 3D model of your project. This allows you to clearly visualise your home, explore design options and understand how spaces will work before construction begins.
We guide you through the full architectural process, including planning applications, Building Regulations approval and construction support, while also providing advice on retrofit, energy efficiency and low-carbon building systems.
How we work
Whether you are planning a retrofit, a house extension or a new home, we guide you through the design and construction process with clarity and care.
Our approach combines architectural design with sustainability expertise. We draw on our experience in retrofit, building physics and Passivhaus-informed design to ensure that energy performance is integrated from the earliest stages.
From the first conversation through to construction, we focus on creating homes that are beautiful, practical and environmentally responsible.
Our Process
-

Initial consultation
Every project begins with a conversation.
We usually start with a visit to your home or site to understand your space, ambitions, and budget. This early discussion helps us explore the potential of your property and identify opportunities for improvement.
At this stage, we also provide initial advice on planning constraints, retrofit options and sustainability considerations.
-

Design and Planning
Once we understand your brief, we begin developing design ideas.
Using our 3D design process, we create a series of design options to help you explore the possibilities for your home. Together, we refine the design into a preferred proposal that responds to your needs, your budget and the site context.
Where planning permission is required, we prepare the necessary drawings and submit the application to the local authority, managing the process and responding to feedback.
-

Technical Design and Construction
After planning approval, we develop the technical drawings needed for construction and Building Regulations approval.
This detailed design stage ensures that the building performs well in terms of energy efficiency, durability and buildability. Contractors can then use the completed drawing package to provide accurate quotations.
During construction, we can remain involved to support the process, providing additional design details, responding to queries and helping ensure the project is delivered as intended.
Our Services
Retrofit
Make your home energy-efficient and low-carbon without losing comfort or style. Together with Cumbria Action for Sustainability, we provide retrofit assessment and energy modelling to determine how much energy your home can save. While we can work on all types of properties, we often specialise in historic buildings with solid stone walls which often require bespoke design.
We aim to improve your home's energy efficiency with customized retrofit plans, emphasising insulation and renewable energy systems that fit your needs and budget. We advocate for smarter retrofitting using natural materials and breathable insulation for healthier homes.
Whether you're considering a complete retrofit or small upgrades, we can help you prioritise improvements for the best results.
New Builds
We can create an energy-efficient home tailored to your needs. As a Certified Passivhaus Designer, we specialise in building homes based on Passivhaus principles.
We also design eco-friendly houses using natural materials such as hempcrete, straw bales, and timber.
Sustainable Consultancy
We focus on research to stay at the forefront of our industry. We are dedicated to sharing our knowledge and skills with the built environment community. We collaborate with local groups and charities to share information. We offer design advice and reviews to planning authorities. Whether you need expert advice on sustainable design, a speaker for your event, or training for your team, we are ready to assist you.
Home Renovations
We can maximize your space and create custom built-in furniture just for you. Renovations are the best time to improve energy efficiency in your home. We will guide you through the process to achieve a high-quality finish and get the most out of the project.
Loft Conversions
We can help you transform your unused attic into functional space for your family. This could include an extra office, bedroom, or bathroom. We will work with your current roofline and permitted development rights, or design a dormer to increase head height and improve light, views, and the appearance of your home.
Home Extensions
We specialise in designing extensions that enhance the layout and functionality of your home. Our commitment is to deliver extensions that not only fulfil your specific requirements but also adhere to the highest standards of energy efficiency, ensuring that your existing building’s energy use is minimised often tackling easy wins for retrofit as part of the works.
Whether you are aiming to expand your living area, add additional bedrooms, or create a new kitchen space, we excel in crafting bespoke designs tailored to your needs while being sensitive to environmental considerations. Our holistic approach allows us to evaluate your home as a whole, ensuring that every square metre of space is maximised effectively.
