Air Source Heat Pumps Just Got Easier to Install

Big news for homeowners for retrofitting, the planning rules for air source heat pumps (ASHPs) have been updated, making it simpler to integrate these low-carbon heating systems into your home. Here’s what’s changed and what it means for your project…

  • No more 1m rule - Previously, ASHPs had to be at least 1 metre from your boundary, otherwise planning permission would be required. Which was pretty much impossible to achieve in a terrace house. Now that the restriction has been removed, as long as the installation meets the latest MCS 020 noise standards, you can install closer to your property edge without needing planning permission.

  • Larger units now allowed - The size cap has increased from 0.6m³ to 1.5m³, meaning most modern, more efficient ASHPs now qualify under permitted development rights. That’s great news for larger homes with higher heating demands. Although with our retrofits, we strive to work with your property to lower your heating demand enough for a smaller size heat pump. Equally, if you live in a detached property, you can now install two ASHP units without planning permission, which is ideal for larger systems.

  • Air to Air Heat Pumps now included - Air-to-air heat pumps, which can cool as well as heat, are now officially included in the updated rules. These are a flexible option for homes needing both summer comfort and winter warmth.

What does this mean for you?

These changes remove key planning barriers, making it much easier to install ASHPs, especially in homes with limited outside space or larger heating needs. If you’re considering a heating upgrade, there’s never been a better time. Plus, you may be eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which offers up to £7,500 in grants for ASHP installation.

Are There Any Exceptions?

Yes, if your property is listed or in a conservation area, you may still need planning permission. We recommend checking with your local planning authority or speaking with an architect (like us!) who understands heritage constraints and sustainable retrofits.
